internships

Each season, Berkshire Theatre Festival offers between 25-30 internships. Length of internship varies from 3-4 months, depending on the position and the intern’s availability. Generally from mid-May to Labor Day, interns will work on four Main Stage Equity productions and four productions in the Unicorn Theatre. Winter administrative internships are also available.

At BTF, we aspire to the time-honored tradition of true mentorship; once procedures and safety regulations are understood, interns are able to work closely with department heads on many different tasks. We prefer participants who are anxious to test their wings.

The hours and days per week of work vary depending on departmental needs, but are generally 9am to 6pm, with a onehour lunch break. With the exception of working on run crew and during change-over, evening work is limited whenever possible.

“Part college dorm, part elite internship, and part intensive community experiment, the education program at Berkshire Theatre Festival provides an experience unlike any other.”
- Jeremy D. Goodwin, The Berkshire Record

frequently asked questions

Is room and board included?
Yes. The Lavan Center, BTF’s housing complex, is one mile from the two theatres. Interns and apprentices receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Saturday and brunch and dinner on Sunday.

What are the theatres like?
The Main Stage is a LORT B theatre, housed in a 120-year-old, 404-seat proscenium theatre. The Unicorn Theatre was rebuilt in 1996, has 122 seats, and a thrust stage.

How long is each production?
Generally each production runs for three weeks and we do not run in rep. Crews run shows in the Main Stage and Unicorn Theatre simultaneously.

Do I need a car?
A car is convenient and you are welcome to bring one. However, you don’t need one as there is usually no problem getting a ride to and from the main housing, and the town of Stockbridge is less than a mile from the theatre complex.

Do interns and apprentices return to BTF?
Many interns and apprentices return to work at BTF and distinguish themselves as staff and on stage after their training season.
