Berkshire Theatre Festival’s Summer Performance Training Program is a multi-dimensional approach to acting that combines a strong emphasis on movement and on vocal technique. The uniqueness of the program lies in our fundamental belief that theatre succeeds through ensemble work. As a result, participants in the program become part of the BTF community, attending classes each day and assisting in a variety of settings, including production, hospitality, and marketing.

Most significant is the program’s daily training led by Artistic Associate E. Gray Simons III. Simons teaches the Suzuki Method of Actor Training. This acting method is a rigorous voice and movement program designed to create an intense physical condition in the actor’s body that gives him/her a greater sense of physical awareness, as well as a pathway into an emotional life that is honestly connected to the actor’s voice. Complimenting Simons’ work are text-based classes led by company actor and master teacher Jonathan Epstein that mphasize the deep connection between voice and character. Special classes are led by Eric Hill, who introduced the Suzuki Method of Actor Trainingto the United States, and BTF Executive Director and actress Kate Maguire. Participants should be prepared for a vigorous and all-encompassing approach to professional theatre. Acting apprentices in the Summer Performance Training Program are assured acting opportunities in the season’s productions. Apprentices also may earn Equity Membership Candidacy (EMC) points by understudying on the Main Stage.

frequently asked questions

Is room and board included?
Yes. The Lavan Center, BTF’s housing complex, is one mile from the two theatres. Interns and apprentices receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Saturday and brunch and dinner on Sunday.

What are the theatres like?
The Main Stage is a LORT B theatre, housed in a 120-year-old, 404-seat proscenium theatre. The Unicorn Theatre was rebuilt in 1996, has 122 seats, and a thrust stage.

How long is each production?
Generally each production runs for three weeks and we do not run in rep. Crews run shows in the Main Stage and Unicorn Theatre simultaneously.

Do I need a car?
A car is convenient and you are welcome to bring one. However, you don’t need one as there is usually no problem getting a ride to and from the main housing, and the town of Stockbridge is less than a mile from the theatre complex.

Do interns and apprentices return to BTF?
Many interns and apprentices return to work at BTF and distinguish themselves as staff and on stage after their training season.
