American Theatre magazine deemed the Berkshire Theatre Festival “an American
revolution.” For me, that translates into confirmation of the wealth of
theatrical experience we bring to all of our productions on both the Main
Stage and in the Unicorn Theatre. The BTF is celebrating its ninth decade,
still drawing inspiration from our spirited founding fathers and first
lady of our stage, the legendary actor Eva LeGallienne who saw theatre
as, “a great force capable of spreading beauty and understanding;” that
“great force” continues to power our engine, regenerating rebirth after
rebirth, insuring the survival of that most wondrous blend of delusion
and truth – live theatre.
Last year, more than 40,000 people attended performances at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, proving that live theatre continues to hold a magical presence in today’s fractured world. After centuries of cultural changes, of economic down and upturns, of strife and conflict, the workings of the human heart remain elusive, and theatre presents the forum in which we are able to probe that universal energy, that mysterious, essence – our humanity. Theatre feeds on the mystery that lives in our hearts. It can be found in the theatre in an unexpected snatch of dialogue, a shocking turn of events, a fleeting gesture, a peek into the distant past, an urge to tap our feet. Such is live theatre…such is the Berkshire Theatre Festival.
